Two-for-One English Credit
August 1, 2011
The Department of English provides a program designed to streamline the composition program and to enhance the academic experience of our strongest first-year students.
The program:
- Students with ACT English sub-scores of 28 or higher may side-step EN 1103, Composition I, and enroll in EN 1173, Accelerated Composition II. Those students earning a C or higher in EN 1173 will also receive an “S” in EN 1103, Comp I. Those who earn less than a C in 1173 will have to complete the 1103/1113 sequence.
- Similarly, those students who have been admitted to the Honors College and who have an ACT English subscore of 32 or higher may enroll in EN 1113H, Honors Composition II. After earning a C or higher in 1113H, these students will also receive an “S” in EN 1103, Comp I. Any earning less than a C would, likewise, be required to complete the 1103/1113 sequence.
Students successfully completing EN 1173 or EN 1113H thereby receive 6 hours academic credit for the one three-hour class, satisfying the composition requirement for Mississippi State University.
Students who receive a D or an F in EN 1173 or EN 1113H are not eligible to retake EN 1173 or EN 1113H nor do they remain eligible for the two-for-one credit opportunity.
